Coal is a cost effective heat source that gives the highest heat output (BTU) than any other fuel and it is a readily available, cheap fuel for many people. If burning a high quality type of coal (either anthracite or bituminous) it is a very clean burning fuel.
The two types of coal we recommend burning in your outdoor coal boiler are:
- Anthracite: also known as hard coal. The highest quality of coal. It is a hard, brittle, and black lustrous coal. Anthracite burns hotter for longer periods of time producing the highest BTUs of any other type of coal. It is also the cleanest burning type of coal.
- Bituminous: also known as soft coal. Bituminous coal is a middle rank coal between subbituminous (not recommended to burn) and anthracite. Bituminous usually has a high heating (BTU) value. There are different grades of bituminous coal, some that have higher sulfer content than others. Bituminous coal appears shiny and smooth when you first see it, but look closer and you may see it has layers.
Crown Royal Stoves Shaker Grate Series outdoor coal furnace have the original shaker grate and ash pan design which is especially useful for burning coal. The shaker grate and ash pan design were purposefully developed for quick and easy cleaning. The introduction of combustion air under the grates gives a hotter and cleaner burn, while additional air is injected from above the fire, inside the firebox, reducing gases and heat loss up the chimney, producing a cleaner burn that uses less fuel. Our indoor / outdoor coal boilers burn 30% – 50% less than the competition.
We have a Multi Pass Series and Shaker Grate Series, both are outdoor coal furnaces. We also have an Indoor Coal Boiler, which is an indoor coal furnace designed to be located inside garages, shops and barns, not for primary residences.
